The White Rose

Oliver is a Greenwich Village florist trying to hybridize a spectacular white rose--which is also the name of his shop. He also likes to dress in women`s clothes and is having an affair with Marian, a woman nearly twice his age who adores him. Marian is a wealthy and successful Columbia professor with an amusingly haughty cousin, Barton, who is engaged to Sophie. But then Sophie meets Oliver....Jean Hanff Korelitz`s sparkling romantic comedy is based on the Richard Strauss opera DER ROSENKAVALIER; it also incorporates the kind of gender confusion (and its comic results) that Shakespeare often used.
